The use of Biometric data at George Spencer Academy

Biometric data, fingerprints are captured in an encrypted form to receive food and drink at the academy. The fingerprint scan which is taken, does not take the students full fingerprint and instead takes a set of coordinates.  This method of cashless catering speeds up the purchasing process and students therefore spend less time queuing at one of the three canteens on site.

The only organisations with access to your child’s biometric data is George Spencer School and IT staff of Spencer Academies Trust – who oversee the system, ensure consent is in place, and manage who can use it.  The academy does not store any biometric data directly.  CRB Cunninghams are the data processor and operate the biometric system through Fusion on our behalf, securely storing the encrypted fingerprint template.  No other companies, including catering contractors or third-party systems, receive biometric data. There are other systems, such as Arbor, who only receives transaction records and pupil identifiers necessary for reconciling meal payments.  They do not receive any fingerprints or biometric templates.

Under both data protection law and our contract with CRB Cunninghams, biometric data cannot be sold, reused, or transferred.  CRB Cunninghams can only process the data for the purpose of operating the catering system on our behalf and George Spencer Academy maintain full control of the data.  If you withdraw consent at any time, the biometric data is deleted from the system.  To do this please email info@georgespencer.org.uk .  All biometric data is erased form the system once a student leaves the academy.
